What do all the various 'who can send' choices mean?
Solution DEFINITIONS:
  • Accepted: messages are accepted and immediately transmitted to the group
  • Rejected: messages are rejected. Notice is sent to the sender. No other notices are sent.
  • Moderated: messages are NOT automatically transmitted to the group. Instead, a notice is sent to the moderator (or owner, if no moderator is listed) and to the sender. If the moderator approves the message, it is transmitted.
  • "Can send": Equivalent to "accepted", messages from people who "can send" are accepted and immediately transmitted to the group
The most common choices are:
  • Private, moderated for non-subscribers: Messages from members are accepted. All others require moderator approval. If no moderators are listed, owners must approve. THIS IS THE DEFAULT BEHAVIOR FOR ALL NAMI GROUPS. If you want your group to behave differently, you must explicitly change this setting. Instructions on how to do this are here...
  • Moderator and owners ONLY, all others rejected: Messages must come from moderators and/or owners. All others are rejected.
  • Restricted to subscribers and NAMI staff: Messages from subscribers and members of the allstaff mail group are accepted. All others are rejected.
  • Private, open to nami staff, moderated for non-subscribers: Messages from members are accepted. Messages from members of the ALLSTAFF group are accepted. All others require moderator approval. If no moderators are listed, owners must approve.
From top to bottom:
  • Closed: All messages are rejected.
  • Restricted to subscribers: Messages from subscribers are accepted. All others are rejected.
  • Moderated: All messages sent to the group by members must be approved by a moderator. If no moderators are listed, owners will have to approve the message.
  • Moderated, even for moderators: ALL messages sent to the group must be approved, regardless of origin.
  • Moderated, with editor confirmation: Messages must be approved by moderators. Moderators will then receive a confirmation e-mail to which they must reply before the message will be transmitted.
  • Moderator and owners ONLY, all others rejected: Messages must come from moderators and/or owners. All others are rejected. No notice is sent to the moderators or owners.
  • Restricted to the local domain: Only those messages coming from, in this case, mailgroups.nami.org, will be accepted. Deprecated. Do not use this choice.
